Large Scale Construction Robotics Laboratory at Vaihingen Campus

I was able to aid in the following efforts during the research and planning phase of the new Large Scale Construction Robotics Laboratory at the University of Stuttgart:

1. Multi-Story Slab Design

A multi-story mass-timber system consisting of hollow slabs and grid independent columns will be used in the construction of the LCRL. A computational system that automatically places column positions and slab segments was used to determine ideal layouts and edge of slab iterations for the multi-story portion of the building.

2. Reinforcement Fiber Truss
A robotically wound flax fiber truss will reinforce an opening of the skylight located on the timber shell that covers the building.

Since the truss consists of an undulating geometry, a previously untested typology with Core-less Filament Winding, a unique fiber winding sequence is required. To evaluate the feasibility of the truss, a scaled winding frame was designed and fabricated to test fabrication sequences.

Winding tests led to finding sequences that enable fiber to fiber interaction and continuity of the structure. These tests led to the generalization of winding rules as part of a computational workflow.
