Ruled Surface Construction with Concrete

An existing building was refurbished into a coworking space with a new program that forms a continuous sequence of concrete elements. The program is juxtaposed on the existing space through the use of red concrete and ruled surfaces.

A technique to fabricate ruled formwork was developed using thin plywood and minimal reinforcement ribs. The ruled surface is achieved by connecting plywood planks through a cross lap joint, allowing torsion on the planks. This technique was first tested in a set of initial prototypes and compared to other materials such as fiberglass composites. The resulting pattern on the built elements reveals the connections of the formwork.
