Wicker Glitch Lamp

Exploration with Digital Glitch Artifacts in Design

This lamp forms part of a set of physical explorations conducted within Michan Architecture, with the objective of extrapolating digital phenomena for applications in design. In this case, the bitmap glitch, a common error or malfunction in corrupt digital media, was translated into an artifact for a lamp design.

A 3D model of the lamp was mapped in a way that allows the elongation of a texturing image on select surfaces.

The digital effect informed the application of wicker on a metal frame, where an artisan was instructed to use two different techniques for the weaving of fibers. The lamp reveals the artifact by casting glitched shadows onto the lit space.
